After defeating second-placed Senegal by a tie, he drew 1-1 with Ecuador before finally defeating hosts Qatar 2-0, earning seven points.

However, despite few cautions in his first three matches, Van Gaal was heavily criticized at the post-match press conference as to why the match was not particularly enjoyable.

"I think you have different opinions about football, so I'm not going to elaborate on that," he told journalists.

"I don't mind going home tomorrow because I think it's terribly boring, so why don't you write it down?"

When van Gaal said that fans on social media clenched their teeth at the display, he replied:

"I'm sorry, but I disagree with you. "That's your opinion, but I don't think you're right. I think everyone is proud to be going to the next round.

"I don't think things are as bad as you say."
